Auch wenn Johnny Cash's Album "At Folsom Prison" bekannter ist, ist "At San Quentin" artistisch gesehen, das bessere Album. Johnny Cash wirkt wilder - manche meinen, es liegt an dem Verlust des Gitarristen Luther Perkins - aber zur gleichen Zeit wirkt er zufriedener und ist mehr im Einklang mit dem Publikum. Er witzelt über seine Drogenabhängigkeit, rebelliert gegen das britische Fernsehen, was die Show aufzeichnen möchte und das ganze wirkt so, als würde er wirklich gerne den Bastard killen der in Sue genannt hat.
