„Tattoo You“ wurde ursprünglich am 24. August 1981 von Rolling Stones Records veröffentlicht. Es ist das 16. britische und 18. amerikanische Studioalbum der englischen Rocklegenden.
Bei den neun Songs der Platte handelt es sich größtenteils um Studio-Outtakes, die in den 1970er-Jahren aufgenommen wurden. Keith Richards sagte dazu: „Die Sache mit ,Tattoo You‘ war nicht, dass wir aufgehört hätten, neue Sachen zu schreiben, es war eine Frage der Zeit. Wir waren uns einig, dass wir auf Tour gehen wollten, und wir wollten hinter einer Platte her touren. Wir hatten keine Zeit, ein ganzes neues Album aufzunehmen und die Tournee zu beginnen.“
Mit „Start Me Up“ ist auf „Tattoo You“ auch einer der bekanntesten Stones-Songs überhaupt. Er erreichte Platz zwei der US-Billboard-Singles-Charts. Das Album erreichte in den USA Platz eins der Charts, Platz zwei im UK und Platz drei in Deutschland.
Für die neuen 40th Anniversary Editions wurde das Album komplett remastert und erweitert. Es warten auch ein paar unveröffentlichte Tracks.
